An international contest — which also includes undergrad and graduate participants from Aachen University in Germany; Art Center College of Design in California; and Deakin University in Australia; — the goal of each school in the competition is to design a 21st century vehicle that will recapture the attributes that made Henry Ford’s Model T the revolutionary automobile it was - simple, lightweight, practical, compelling and inexpensive.

May 14th, 2008 in Autos, Detroit, Events

ntwlogoOn Monday, Detroit, Michigan, and the rest of the country kicked off the 2008 edition of National Transportation Week (NTW). Running from May 11 - 17, Detroit is the host city of this annual transportation industry hurrah for the second consecutive year.

Sure, NTW was a great success in Detroit in 2007, but this year’s celebration is extra-special because it also marks the start of “2008: Year of the Car,” a summer-long festival in Southeast Michigan designed to celebrate 100 years of General Motors and Ford’s Model T. More than 120 auto-themed activities are planned for the region through early October. [ Read more ]

mansionShiny new buildings are nice, but there’s something about old historic structures that makes them … well, special.

The state understands this and the importance of preserving our history, and, as such, recognizes and honors several preservation projects annually with a special accolade - the Governor’s Award for Historic Preservation.

With May designated as National Historic Preservation month, it was only fitting that Governor Jennifer Granholm recently announced the recipients of this special award. They will be honored at a ceremony in the state Capitol rotunda later this week. [ Read more ]

biodiesel_pumpA conventional energy company is not the first business I would suspect of going green, so I was surprised to find out that DTE Energy is currently taking steps to do just that. Michigan’s Creative Economy Gets a Boost

by Jaime Pfeffer

May 8th, 2008 in Companies, Creative, Design, Digital, News, Talent

michigan_state_capitolWe all know how important - scratch that - vital it is to cultivate Michigan’s creative economy. Doing so will allow us to retain and attract the type of dynamic young people our region needs to turn itself around, and will help our great state get away from its reliance on an outdated auto industry. Once these things start happening, capital and talent will follow and Michigan will attain a prominent position in the global economy.

This shift towards a creative economy will not happen overnight, but bills like the ones Governor Granholm signed last week will help get us there faster. [ Read more ]

May 7th, 2008 in Detroit, Entertainment, Events, Lifestyle, Music

cowboy-hat-amazonThe 26th annual Downtown Hoedown hits Detroit this weekend, and - as in years past - this Hart Plaza Festival promises to deliver great national music acts, tasty treats and an all-around good time.

Back in March, MiLifeMiTimes’ Nikki Stephan wrote candidly about the event — dubbed as the nation’s largest free country music fest — even delving into the Hoedown’s history and how it was the launching pad for some of country music’s biggest stars.
